If you’re considering a move to Katy, TX, employment opportunities probably play a big role in your decision. If you’ve already got a new job lined up, great! You’ll love learning more about all that Katy has to offer. But relocating to a new city can be scary if there is no job in place, and without a job, it’s difficult to find a place to live. Your job determines how much money you have to spend on housing, schools and everyday living. You also don’t want to start a new job in a new city if it isn’t one you find fulfilling, or if it doesn’t improve your quality of life.
Before you start packing your bags and hiring a realtor, consider that these are the largest career fields and companies in Katy. This doesn’t mean you can’t find work in other industries, or that the only reason to move to Katy is if you work in one of these fields. However, if you’re interested in any of these areas, or have experience that will help you secure a job in one of these industries, Katy just might be the place for you!
Gas & Oil
One of the largest job fields in Katy is the gas and oil industry. Several prominent gas and oil companies have headquarters in Katy (or surrounding cities like Houston), bringing a bounty of work to the region. Some of the gas and oil companies you’ll find in the area include BP America, Conoco Phillips, Shell Oil, Global Santa Fe and Exxon Mobil.
While drilling and maintenance positions generally lead this field, you’ll also find administrative and management positions to help these companies run smoothly. Goldman Sachs recently estimated that the oil industry will need to hire tens of thousands of workers in the next two and a half years as oil prices recover from the 2014 price downturn.
Engineering
There are lots of engineering jobs available in Katy, due to the large amount of engineering companies that exist in the city. Some of these companies include Brooks & Sparks, Inc., Becker Engineering, Inc. and Pactive Engineering. Wood Group also has a location in Houston, producing additional jobs in the Katy area. You’ll find employers looking for software engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and civil engineers.
Healthcare
With large hospitals like Houston Methodist St. Catherine Hospital and Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital, there are often plenty of job prospects in Katy for healthcare workers. Houston Methodist St. Catherine (which is an extension of Houston Methodist West Hospital) offers outpatient services like imaging, cardiac rehabilitation and wound care. It is a long-term acute care hospital and serves the Greater Houston area.
Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital has been serving the area for more than 30 years and covers medical services related to cancer, diabetes, orthopedics, vascular care, drug and alcohol rehabilitation and physical therapy.
There’s also Brite Health Care, a medical equipment company that services all over the state of Texas. If you’re a medical professional, Katy’s got an opportunity for you.
Education
Looking for a job in the education field? Your best bet is Katy Independent School District. With over 60 schools and student enrollment of more than 70,000, KISD opened two new elementary schools and a junior high in 2016, with several more set to open in 2017. From teachers to school counselors to administrative roles, KISD is sure to have a variety of job openings in the coming months.
Houston Community College (HCC) is another great place for people interested in academics to find work. The HCC system operates campuses in Houston, Missouri City, Stafford and Katy. Student enrollment is close to 69,300, offering many opportunities for employment for professors and administrators. There may also be opportunities available for furthering your education, which may lead to even better jobs down the road.
Retail
When it comes to retail employment, Katy has no shortage of places looking for part-time or full-time sales and customer service employees. Indoor shopping center Katy Mills is home to over 175 stores including H&M, Kate Spade New York, Tommy Bahama and other high-fashion brands. The Katy/Houston area also has sister malls, The Galleria and Houston Premium Outlets.
If you’re looking for an administrative or management position, there is also a Walmart Super Center and the Academy Sports Corporate Headquarters & Distribution Center. The Shoppes at Parkwest, which has completed its first phase of construction, also houses retailers like Buy Buy Baby, PetSmart, DSW and Kirkland’s. It is located at Interstate 10 and Fort Bend Road. Further expansion on this development is scheduled through 2017, allowing for even more job opportunities in the retail field.
Manufacturing
In Katy, the manufacturing job sector includes companies like Igloo Products Corp., which manufactures over 500 cooler products, and Dyna-Drill, who moved their down hole motor equipment headquarters to Katy about four years ago. Job prospects in the manufacturing industry continue to grow as the city enjoys a boost in economic development.
